I shared recently that I was hospitalized with pregnancy complications. I’ve now been on bed rest for a month and a half. Two and a half weeks of that were in the hospital, and I’ll be in bed at least another two weeks.
Writing has not come easily in this time, and the blank cursor is taunting me even today.
Should I write a “how to” on coping with bed rest? An encouraging reflection on how God has blessed our family in these weeks? An honest revelation of the emotional ups and downs I’m battling each day?
Maybe I’ll tackle these in coming posts. But today, I hope to turn my thoughts and yours to something positive.
While I was in the hospital, I read a book about thankfulness in the midst of trials. Here’s a quote that stuck with me:
While I may not always feel joy, God asks me to give thanks in all things, because he knows that the feeling of joy begins in the action of Thanksgiving.
– Ann Voskamp, One Thousand Gifts
The writer made a habit of daily writing down things she was thankful for. Big or little, it doesn’t matter. I’ve been trying to practice this habit myself. Let me be honest: some days I fail. You should have heard my pity party earlier this week.
But, I can also attest that when we choose to be thankful, God really does bless us with joy. Today I want to share some of my list from the past weeks, but I encourage you to make your own. It changes your perspective and brings joy, even in the midst of hardship!
Thank You, God, For:
Every time Baby kicks, telling me he is alive and healthy.
A hospital room to myself for ten days.
A table fan that kept my room cool.
A mini fridge in my hospital room.
Every visit with my Nora and Titus; snuggles; Titus falling asleep in my arms.
Josh coming to the hospital and holding me on that hardest day.
My mom, who visited every day and brought food and smiles to cheer me up.
Doctors and nurses who smile.
My own toilet in the hospital room.
Open windows, sunshine and a refreshing breeze.
Fresh flowers to brighten my room.
Being able to go home and continue bed rest with my family close by.
My Nora, who ran to me suddenly this morning and gave me a hug.
Books, my Bible, teachings and soothing music.
Josh and the guys at church setting up live streaming, so I can still “be there” for Sunday service.
My mom coming first to the hospital and now to our house almost daily to help with the kids, cook and clean, and keep me company.
Nora, who is becoming such a big helper while Mama is in bed.
Titus, with his toothy grin and belly laughs.
Every day that I have no bleeding.
Josh going to the grocery at 7 AM while the rest of us were sleeping.
Being able to celebrate my husband’s birthday with him at home.
Family and friends, who have continually called, written, and come over to help or encourage.
Thank you for encouraging me today.
Continuing to keep you and your little one in prayer.
